Best things to do in Burleigh Heads
Are you planning a trip to explore the Gold Coast and looking for the best things to do in Burleigh Heads? Well, you’ve arrived at the perfect travel guide.
In this Burleigh Heads travel guide, I’ll share everything you need to plan the ultimate coastal escape in this East Coast, Queensland paradise. Whether it’s the surf, the scenic coastal walks or the abundance of laid-back brunch spots and bakeries in Burleigh Heads that has lured you in, by the end of this blog post, you’re going to see exactly why this corner of the world is so special.
Burleigh Heads itself is nestled on the southern end of the Gold Coast in Queensland, neighbouring Palm Beach and Miami. Whilst other Gold Coast hotspots like Surfers Paradise have a focus on nightlife, and Coolangatta, the mecca for surfing, I’d say Burleigh is a dreamy blend of the two. You’ll find a laid-back surf culture, a buzzing food and bar scene, and the addition of the stunning Burleigh National Park that sits right on the headland to explore.
Burleigh is the kind of place where mornings start with ocean (or creek) dips and coffee, and days are spent chasing waves or walking the abundance of coastal trails. In between activities in this heavenly outdoor lifestyle, you bet Burleigh has all the bakeries serving up the freshest bakes, brunches, and post surf treats. Scroll down for rec’s!
If you’re someone who loves the outdoors, good food, a gentle nightlife buzz, and a relaxed coastal vibe, you’re basically going to love Burleigh Heads. The best things to do in Burleigh Heads are going to get you very excited indeed.
Are you ready to explore Burleigh Heads, Queensland?

The best way to get to Burleigh Heads
If you live further than a drive away from Burleigh Heads and you’re looking to fly in, the nearest airport to fly into is Gold Coast Airport (OOL). Gold Coast Airport is located just a 15-minute drive south of Burleigh Heads. Alternatively, you can fly into Brisbane Airport, maybe pick up a car and drive approximately 1-1.5 hours down the coast.
Hiring a car is by far the best way to explore this area, not because you necessarily need it in Burleigh Heads itself, but because there are so many amazing spots a short drive away that you can add onto your trip. Think Lamington National Park, Springbrook National Park, and Byron Bay. If you want to tick off all the best things to do in Burleigh Heads from this guide, AND explore nearby gems at your own pace, a car will be handy indeed.
There are regular buses connecting the Gold Coast suburbs, but having your own wheels gives you the freedom to chase sunrise, surf spots, and hidden beaches as you wish.
If you’re road tripping the east coast of Australia, Burleigh Heads fits perfectly between Byron Bay and Brisbane, and I would say it‘s in my top 3 places to stop in between.

The best places to stay in Burleigh Heads
Burleigh Heads has a great mix of accommodation depending on your vibe and budget. Also, something to consider is whether you will have a car.
If you don’t have a car and have just a few days to explore, I’d suggest finding beachfront (ish) accommodation within walking distance of the Burleigh Pavilion or in the James Street area. Just to make it easy to get around to the main best things to do in Burleigh.
Have a little search and see whats on offer here:
We actually booked an Airbnb a few streets back from the ocean during our stay in Burleigh Heads, maybe a 25-minute walk to the Pavilion. It was a cosy room, and it had everything we needed to enjoy 48 hours in Burleigh. Any longer and we’d have probably opted for some lounge space and a kitchen.
Our host couldn’t have been more accommodating, and there was even a bottle of wine and some chocolates waiting on our arrival. Book our spot here.

The best time to visit Burleigh Heads
Burleigh Heads is a year-round destination.
Summer (December–February) brings hot temperatures and ideal beach days, though it can be very busy with tourism, and you’ll find availability lower and prices higher. Autumn (March–May) is arguably the sweetest spot and my favourite time on the Gold Coast. You still have gorgeous sunny days, warm water, fewer crowds (aside from Easter), and you can catch some epic surf conditions.
Winter (June–August) is definitely the cooler time of year, but provides perfect weather for longer hikes and coastal walks – plus it’s whale migration season! Lastly, Spring (September–November) is another sweet spot, offering warmer weather again and fewer tourists.
If surfing is high on your list of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads, aim for autumn when the swell is most consistent.

Best things to do in Burleigh Heads
Walk the Burleigh Headland Coastal Track
If you do one thing, make it this. The coastal track through Burleigh Head National Park is easily one of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads. The 3.2km trail winds along the coastline, running from the Burleigh Pavilion all the way around to Tallebudgera Creek. The main loop is an easy walk, suitable for most fitness levels, and a perfect opportunity to spot dolphins or whales in season. It takes around 1–2 hours, depending on how often you stop (you will stop a lot).
If you’re feeling adventurous or want an extended trail, there are a few additional trails that climb and weave through the National Park, too. This seems to be a lot of locals running area, so keep an eye out for runners or get your trainers on and join the fun!
Tip: Pack swimmers for a dip at Tallebudgera Creek / Burleigh main beach at the end.

Go for a sunrise or sunset surf at Burleigh Point
Surfing here on the Gold Coast isn’t just ‘good to do’, it’s a world-class surfing reserve. People travel from all over the world to experience these breaks. So surfing is absolutely one of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads.
The famous right-hand point break at Burleigh Heads Beach produces long, peeling waves that wrap around the headland, with sections like Sharkies, The Cove and The Point offering fast, hollow rides when conditions line up.
Intermediate to advanced surfers will want to paddle out at Burleigh Point itself, where the rides can run for hundreds of metres on a good day. If you’re newer to surfing, head slightly north to North Burleigh or, better yet, book a lesson with a local surf school like Burleigh Surf School or Get Wet Surf School for a proper introduction to the area.
The best time to surf is early morning when the winds are lighter, and the crowds are thinner, with ideal conditions typically coming from a southerly swell and offshore winds.

Watch the surfers from the headland
Even if you don’t paddle out yourself, grab a takeaway coffee, sit on the headland and watch the lineup. It’s easily one of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads.
Our recent stay in Burleigh Heads actually timed with a decent Autumn swell (see below) and so we ended up getting a takeaway dinner from The Yiros Shop on James Street and rolled out a picnic blanket on the headland to watch the surf. It was heavenly. There was such a lovely local buzz there too. There’s something about the Gold Coast skyline as a backdrop for the swell that feels so dramatic, right?

Wander the shops and cafes along James Street
James Street is the main shopping strip in Burleigh, and wandering along it is easily one of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads. Especially if you love that effortless mix of beachy lifestyle, boutique shopping and great coffee. Just a block back from the ocean, this strip is the heart of Burleigh, lined with a mix of fashion boutiques, surf stores, homewares and some of the best cafes and bakeries on the Gold Coast.
I’d suggest starting your morning slowly with a coffee from Social Brew, Quest Coffee Roasters or Commune, then take your time browsing local Aussie brands and independent boutiques to pick up beachy finds, gifts and souvenirs. James Street is the kind of place where you pop in for a quick coffee and somehow end up staying all morning.
What really makes this one of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads is how the vibe shifts throughout the day. Come evening, the street takes on a more social, buzzy atmosphere, with spots like Paloma Wine Bar coming to life… perfect for a glass of wine and a few small plates after a day in the sun.

I also loved these little treats from The Fruit Shop Juice Bar on James Street (the one with all the colourful fruits outside). We tried the raw peanut butter cup and the peppermint slice! Stunning little pick me up.

Swim and chill at Tallebudgera Creek
If chasing waves and surfing them isn’t your thing, but gorgeous, calm swims are – Tallebudgera Creek is where you’ll want to head.
Tucked just around the headland from the main Burleigh Beach, this crystal-clear creek is protected from the ocean swell, making Tallebudgera Creek (or Talle creek as locals call it) perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or having a relaxed day by the water.
The water here is famously turquoise – you may have even seen some of those epic drone shots from above. Time it right with the tide and the weather, and you’ll be BLOWN away. You can hire paddleboards and kayaks nearby, or bring your own and explore further up the creek where it winds through lush greenery.
But to be honest, pack your swimmers, your towel, your book and some food and just go claim a spot on the sand. Hanging out at Tallebudgera Creek is one of those experiences that defines the best things to do in Burleigh Heads.

Catch the sunset from Burleigh Hill
Catching sunset from Burleigh Hill is a daily ritual and without a doubt one of the best things to do in Burleigh Heads. Overlooking Burleigh Heads Beach, this grassy headland is the perfect place to unwind after a day in nature.
Arrive an hour or so before sunset to grab a good spot, roll out your picnic blanket or beach towel and then settle in with a takeaway picnic or bottle of wine. As the sun begins to dip, the hill really comes alive with groups of friends, lovers and families coming together as surfers take their last waves of the day.
Soaking up golden hour here in Burleigh Heads is simple, it’s social, and it truly captures everything that makes Burleigh so special.

Visit the Burleigh Heads Markets
Visiting the Burleigh Heads Markets is one of the more local, laid-back best things to do in Burleigh Heads, offering a great glimpse into the community vibe that defines this coastal suburb. The markets are held weekly at Burleigh Heads State School, bringing together local makers, food vendors and creatives in one lively, open-air setting.
Typically, Burleigh Heads markets start from around 7:00 am to 12:00 pm (of course, weather dependent).
So if you find yourself in Burleigh Heads over a weekend, come down and browse the mix of stalls selling handmade jewellery, clothing, homewares, art and wellness products, alongside plenty of food vendors and fresh produce. It’s a great spot to grab a coffee, try something new to eat, and pick up unique souvenirs you won’t find in the typical tourist shops. Live music and a relaxed atmosphere make it easy to linger longer than planned.
Have brunch at Paddock Bakery
Tucked away in a leafy setting just off the main strip, Paddock Bakery has a relaxed, garden-style atmosphere that feels like a hidden oasis. It’s such a vibe.
They’re known for their creative brunch menu, excellent coffee, and freshly baked pastries – especially their cruffins and cookies. Paddock Bakery is the kind of place you come to soak up a slow, long brunch with friends and to bump into the locals.
There are many seats indoors and outdoors, but beware – it’s so popular. Expect to wait a little on weekends and public holidays, but it’s well worth it for one of the most iconic brunch experiences in Burleigh.
Brunch at Paddock Bakery is easily one of my favourite and best things to do in Burleigh Heads. Get it on your list!

Have a drink or dinner at the Burleigh Pavilion
I mean, come on… look at those views!
Positioned right on the beachfront overlooking Burleigh Heads Beach and the main surf break, Burleigh Pavilion is one of the most iconic spots in the area for sunset drinks and long, leisurely meals.
Inside you actually have a few different spots to choose from, depending on your vibes:
- The Pavilion Terrace – The more casual, walk-in friendly area, perfect for post-beach dining. Here you can get wood-fired pizzas, burgers, fish and chips, and salads, with a focus on quick, tasty food.
- The Tropic -A sit-down restaurant with a modern Australian menu with Mediterranean influences. Specialities include seafood platters, some gorgeous sharing places and a creative cocktail list.
- Rick Shores – Okay then you have the infamous Asian Fusion restaurant that seems to always be booked up. I’ve heard amazing things so if you’re looking for a dinner booking with a wow factor, this spot shares the same view you see below across the ocean but it’s in a league of its own.
With DJs on weekends, a lively crowd and an unbeatable view and location, Burleigh Pavilion perfectly captures the laid-back yet vibrant energy that defines the best things to do in Burleigh Heads.

Have a Burleigh Heads Beach day
Spending a full day at Burleigh Heads Beach is one of the most classic best things to do in Burleigh Heads. Stretching along the coastline with golden sand, consistent surf and a backdrop of the iconic headland, it’s the perfect place to slow down, swim, sunbathe and watch the world go by.
The northern end is great for a more relaxed swim, while closer to Burleigh Point you’ll see surfers riding the famous right-hand break. Lifeguards patrol the main areas, and there are plenty of shaded grassy spots nearby if you want to set up for a picnic or escape the midday sun.
Bring a towel, a good book, your favourite podcast and maybe some takeaway from one of the nearby hotspots or a picnic – and you’re set for a full beach day.

Day trips from Burleigh Heads
One of the best things about ticking off the best things to do in Burleigh Heads is how close you are to some of the Gold Coast’s most incredible hinterland. Within an hour’s drive, you can swap surf for rainforest, waterfalls, and mountain views. Burleigh is the perfect base if you’re looking for a bit of both – beach and rainforest!
If you’ve got a car (highly recommended), these day trips are an absolute must and will take your best things to do in Burleigh Heads itinerary to the next level.
