My dream VWÂ van conversion- Ep.3: Kitchen, electrics & roof rack
Though it wasn’t a particularly creative part of the VW van conversion process, the installation of everything electrical, gas and water was one of the most important. Particularly in a design as bespoke as mine, there was a lot of ‘shall we put this here, or shall we put this there?’ questions flying around, and a lot of trial and error too.
Ian (the guy bringing my dream to life practically) and I had committed to working a lot of detail into the running of the van, so it was like a jigsaw piece fitting it all together.
Installing the electrics, plumbing, gas etc. took a lot longer than planned, but we got there in the end and the result is an absolute dream. The van will be winter ready (it has heating installed!) and powered by solar when I’m off the grid!
Here are just some of the features we decided to include and install in this stage of my VW van conversion:
- A heater and thermostat (Propex HEATSOURCE 12V HS2000)
- 2 x 12V Leisure batteries
- LED spot lights on two different switches (kitchen and bedroom split)
- A 100W MonoCrystalline Solar Panel
- A boat shower out the back of the van
- A tap, sink and sink waste in the kitchen
- A two ring gas stove cooker
- A control panel controlling all of the above
- A side step light
- A domestic fridge/freezer
- A skylight over the bedroom
- A custom roof rack to enjoy sunsets on!
It’s a pretty epic project, right?
