Tucked into the far southwest of England on the south coast, located between Falmouth and the Lizard Peninsula, the Helford River is a tidal estuary where ancient woodland meets the water, where trees tower above paths that line the water’s edge, and activities in and on the water are at the heart of what makes life so beautiful here.

The first time I visited Helford River, I spent the afternoon canoeing and took in my surroundings, which was very similar to a memory from British Columbia, Canada. The landscape here really is so different from anywhere else in Cornwall (if not the UK), and it makes for an absolute gem on any Cornwall itinerary – particularly

You may already recognise the Helford from Daphne du Maurier, who used Frenchman’s Creek as the setting and title of her 1941 smuggling romance? That, combined with a reputation for oysters, seahorses, and some of the best wild swimming in the country, is what has put the Helford on the map. But it still feels exclusive, and a trip here is a great retreat from busier spots like St. Ives, Newquay, Padstow, and Bude.

How to Get To the Helford River

By plane: The nearest international gateway is Bristol or London, from where you can fly into Newquay Airport (the closest airport around an hour’s drive from the Helford).

By train: The nearest train stations to the Helford River are Truro or Falmouth, both roughly 20–30 minutes away by car. You can arrive in Truro directly from London Paddington in just over 3 hours (and it’s one of the most stunning train journeys in the country).

If you’re road-tripping from elsewhere in the UK, the A30 is your main road down into Cornwall, and once you’ve passed Truro or Helston, you’ll begin to wind down increasingly narrow lanes before arriving in Helford country.

Where to stay on the Helford River

The river has two very different “sides,” and where you sleep will shape your trip. My recommendation would be to go through the best things to do on the Helford River (read the rest of this post) and then see where your favourite things are located on the map.

The north bank (Helford Passage, Durgan, Port Navas) has easier road access and is where you’ll find Budock Vean Hotel (where I recently stayed, see below) and most of the paddling operators.

The south bank (Helford village, Frenchman’s Creek, Manaccan) feels wilder and more remote, and is best reached either by driving the long way round or hopping on the passenger ferry.

Tip: When booking your accommodation, consider road access and water access. Some spots along the river are quite remote.

My most recent visit to the Helford River had me explore from the Budock Vean Hotel, which is around 20 minutes from Falmouth and sits on 64 acres of woodland right on the riverfront. Yep, after your morning coffee and continental breakfast, you can take a 5-minute wander through the lush rainforest (with your spa robe still on if you fancy) down to dip your toes in the water.

We spent our 3 days on the Helford River, floating between the hotel spa’s jacuzzi and sauna, the GAIA treatments on offer, and the surrounding walks and offerings. Notably, the river cruise, which allowed us to explore the whole river from the water (more details below). If you’re looking for your Helford River trip to feel like a retreat, I wouldn’t hesitate to book Budock Vean. It felt so grounding to be on the land; it felt exclusive, but you are still close enough to explore everything listed in the below best things to do in Helford River.

Best time to visit the Helford River

May to September is the general window for enjoyable weather on the Helford River, though as you probably know, you cannot guarantee the weather in this country!!!

What I can say is that the warmest swimming water arrives late in the season. The Helford’s sheltered, shallow creeks mean the water often peaks around 16–18°C in September, later than the open coast.

Come in spring, and you’ll see bluebells and camellias through the woodland gardens, while late October rewards visitors with the temperate rainforest turning gold, quieter trails and accommodation, and excellent fishing. I visited in July, and there was a heatwave with very little wind, which was stunning for getting in and on the water and enjoying dinner and breakfast al fresco.

The Best Things to Do on the Helford River

Kayaking or SUP from Helford Passage Beach

Helford Passage Beach is the easiest and most popular launch point on the river for kayaking, canoeing, or stand-up paddleboarding. Bring your own or know that there are rental kiosks right on the sand here with calm, sheltered waters ready for you!

Once you paddle out, you’re straight into some of the best wildlife-watching on the south coast… egrets, herons, oystercatchers, and the odd flash of a kingfisher along the banks, plus the chance of spotting seals or even dolphins further downriver. It’s also one of the more reliable spots to snorkel for seahorses, which the Helford is quietly famous for, thanks to its eelgrass beds and sheltered, nutrient-rich water.

Whether you’re renting for an hour or spending a full day exploring, this is without a doubt one of the best things to do on Helford River.

Lunch or Dinner at Ferry Boat Inn

Right on the same sand here at Helford Passage, you’ll notice the Ferry Boat Inn – a 300-year-old pub with one of the best beer-garden views on the entire river. Yep, if you don’t fancy getting on or in the water, you can sit here with a cold beer and watch others enjoying their adventures instead.

The Ferry Boat Inn is the natural meeting point for anyone exploring the north bank, it’s got a real social buzz with people just stoked on outdoor adventure. Grab a table on the terrace with a pint of Cornish ale and watch the ferry, kayaks, and paddleboarders come and go. The Inn is a brilliant lunch stop before or after a walk, and also where you can pick up the passenger ferry across to Helford village if you’re continuing your Helford River adventure over on the south bank.

Trebah Garden

Trebah is a 26-acre subtropical ravine garden that tumbles almost 200 feet down to its own private beach on the Helford River, and it’s an essential stop… even for those of you who don’t think of yourselves as garden people. The valley is planted with giant gunnera, tree ferns, and swathes of rhododendron and hydrangea, all fed by a natural spring, and you can walk down through the jungle-like canopy to the water.

It’s dog-friendly, yay! It has an adventure play area for families, and the beach at the bottom is a lovely, easy spot for a paddle or a picnic once you’ve explored the four miles of paths. Book tickets here via Trebah Garden.

Spa Day, Dinner, or Golf at Budock Vean Hotel

You have options here – book a stay at this stunning 4* spa hotel (which is what we did), or simply drop in for a spa day, dinner, or drinks at the bar and restaurant, which also has plenty of outdoor seating. Set on 64 acres, the grounds include a 9-hole golf course, making this one of the best things to do near the Helford River if you’re travelling with friends or a partner who has different interests – you can spend the day doing your own thing and come back together for a great dinner in the evening.

Cold Dip at Grebe Beach

If you’d like a little beach afternoon or a cold swim at sunrise, Grebe Beach is the spot. Here you have a local’s favourite with a secluded, tree-fringed shingle beach reached via a short woodland walk from the National Trust car park above Durgan.

The water is calm, clear, and cold enough to properly wake you up. Apparently, this location became a hub for cold swimmers during the pandemic and a place to connect with like-minded people.

Rumour has it, come after dark, late summer, and on the right night, you can swim through bioluminescent plankton that lights up green with every stroke – a slightly earlier and increasingly reliable phenomenon here as the water warms each year. Just be aware that the beach almost disappears at high tide, so check tide times before you commit to a full afternoon on the sand.

Frenchman’s Creek Walk

This is one of the best hikes in the Helford River. Start by looking for the small chapel sign near Kestle Barton, then follow the circular route clockwise through woodland, farmland, and past the Roskilly’s-run Honest café for a coffee stop, before dropping down alongside Frenchman’s Creek itself.

Try to time it with high tide, when the creek fills completely with water, turning the walk into a genuinely magical stretch of glassy, mirror-still creek fringed by ancient oaks. At low tide, it’s mostly mud.

If you’re staying on the north bank (like we were at Budock Vean), the easiest way to reach the trailhead without a long drive around is to take the passenger ferry from the Ferry Boat Inn (it’s around £11 one way), which feels steep for a five-minute crossing, but it saves a 40-minute drive around the estuary and is worth every penny.

Kayak Frenchman’s Creek

If you’re not doing the walk, consider renting a kayak or Canoe from Ferry Boat Inn and making your way down this stunning creek.

Frenchman’s Creek is too shallow for motorboats at most states of the tide, which is exactly what makes it one of the best things to do on the Helford River for paddlers. I’d recommend timing it with high tide so that you have plenty of water beneath you. You’ll have this hauntingly beautiful, wooded creek almost entirely to yourself without the sounds of boats passing by.

Watch out for herons, egrets, and kingfishers along the banks as you go. Take a picnic and pull up on one of the creek’s tiny shingle beaches.

Book a river cruise and discover the Helford River from a boat

We were only in the Helford River area for 3 days and two nights, nowhere near enough time to make our way around and see it all. Booking onto a river cruise felt like the perfect way to explore and see the river from a fresh, fun perspective, whilst also birdwatching and hearing some fun myths and tales from our tour guide.

We booked our tour through Budock Vean Hotel, but you don’t need to be staying there to book one for yourself. Stay at the Powder Hut, a National Trust Cottage

For a genuinely special overnight stay, book Powders… a 1930s wooden bungalow on the headland where Frenchman’s Creek meets the main river, easily spotted on the corner beneath a large tree. It’s named after its original owner, Percy “Powders” Thurburn, a sailor and artist who settled here after years at sea. The setting is insane. See below.

With the riverside pub and post office in Helford village just a walk across the headland, it’s the perfect retreat if there are a few of you coming. Inside, it’s a smart, two-bedroom retreat with wood floors and a modern kitchen, and you can hop straight onto the ferry from nearby for trips across the river. Temperate Rainforest Walks

The woodland lining the Helford is one of Britain’s rare surviving temperate rainforests, roughly 90% oak, and it’s worth building a whole afternoon around simply walking through it. This ecosystem, ancient, mossy, and dripping with lichen, is the subject of the documentary No Trees No Seas, made with forest ecologist Sam Manning, which explores the surprising connection between healthy forests like this one and the health of the sea beyond.

Come at the end of October, and the whole valley turns gold, the trails empty out, and the river fills with mullet and bass, making it as good a season for anglers as it is for photographers. Whether you’re walking the Frenchman’s Creek loop, the Durgan-to-Grebe stretch, or the wider coast path, this ancient woodland is the backdrop to almost every one of the best things to do on the Helford River.

Lunch at Port Navas Yacht Club

Tucked into the tiny, picture-postcard village of Port Navas, this members’ bar and restaurant welcomes non-members and is one of the best-kept secrets on the whole river.

Come and have lunch at this converted yacht club perched right on the water with a short, ever-changing menu of genuinely excellent, locally sourced food. You can arrive by car, on foot, or by kayak (paddlers regularly pull up at the quay), and expect standout seafood, seasonal specials, and a laid-back, sailing-club atmosphere that feels more like a private discovery than a restaurant.

It’s known for opening on a limited seasonal schedule rather than every day (oo exclusive vibes), so double-check current opening days and book ahead by email before you go. Tables fill up fast in summer. Reserve via the Port Navas Yacht Club website.

Helford Village

And last but not least, one of the best things to do on the Helford River is head to the south bank and wander Helford village. Here you have a cluster of thatched cottages around a tidal creek, with a pub, a small shop, and the ferry landing point. Local lore (from our river cruise guide) holds that Helford was once considered so remote and lawless that it was, for a time, effectively beyond the reach of formal authority. It’s worth treating this as a colourful local legend rather than confirmed history if you’re repeating it, but it fits the spirit of a place that still feels wonderfully cut off from the rest of Cornwall. Wander the lanes, pop into the pub, and take in just how quiet a working Cornish river village can be, even in high summer.
