The Best Places To Travel In September

If you’re searching for the best places to visit in September but aren’t sure where to start, this is the only guide you need. Whether you’re after a sun-soaked beach, an epic road trip, a festival you’ll never forget, or a winter escape somewhere totally unexpected, we’ve got you covered. If you know you’re travelling in September but have absolutely no idea where yet, you are in exactly the right place.

Here’s the thing about September travel that most people don’t realise: it might just be the best month of the entire year to go somewhere. In the Northern Hemisphere, summer temperatures are still warm, but the crowds have faded, prices have dropped, and everything just feels a little more relaxed. September is when Europe finally exhales after the August rush. Greece, Italy, and Portugal are still gorgeous but with fewer people and ultimately more charm. Meanwhile, legendary festivals like Burning Man are happening in the Nevada desert, and Ibiza’s famous closing parties are pulling in the world’s best DJs for one last send-off before the season ends.

Flip to the Southern Hemisphere, and September tells a completely different story. Spring is arriving in Australia and New Zealand, wildflowers are blooming, and national parks are a perfect temperature before the summer heat arrives. In Southeast Asia, the rainy season is easing off, leaving behind landscapes so green and lush they look almost unreal — and with far fewer tourists than peak season.

The best things to do in September cover every travel style, every budget, and every kind of trip: beach, mountains, festivals, road trips – you name it.

Best Places to Travel in September

Yosemite National Park, California, USA

Yosemite in September might be the sweet spot: the summer crowds have thinned out, temperatures sit around 20–25°C, and the light on Half Dome at golden hour is pretty surreal. Top hikes include the Half Dome Trail (you’ll need a permit), the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls, and the quieter Panorama Trail if you want sweeping valley views without the crowds. Stay at Upper Pines Campground in the valley, grab food at the Village Grill Deck, or start your morning with coffee and a pastry at Degnan’s Kitchen in Yosemite Village.

Best picnic spot: Sentinel Beach along the Merced River – spread out a blanket, listen to the water, and look up at El Capitan. Perfection.

Travel tip:

September has some of the clearest skies in Yosemite all year, perfect for stargazing from your tent.

Best Places to Travel in September

Burning Man, Nevada, USA

If there’s one experience that belongs on a bucket list, it’s Burning Man. Held annually in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada at the end of August into early September. Around 70,000 people descend on the desert to build a temporary city, a radical, art-filled, community-driven world that disappears without a trace when it’s over. Think enormous art installations, themed camps, incredible costumes, sunrises over the playa, people cycling around on bicycles and a genuine sense that normal life has been completely suspended.

September travel doesn’t get more immersive than this. Temperatures in the desert swing wildly, scorching hot during the day (35°C+) and cold at night, so pack accordingly. The climax is the burning of the iconic wooden Man effigy, followed later by the burning of the Temple, which is one of the most moving and heartfelt experiences.

  • Many people drive from San Francisco (~5 hours) and make it a full road trip.
  • Fun fact: Leave No Trace is taken so seriously that participants literally sift the desert sand for debris before leaving.

Greece

Honestly? September is the best time to visit Greece, and anyone who’s been in August will tell you the same thing. The tourists thin out, the sea is at its absolute warmest (around 26°C), and the golden September light on whitewashed walls is SO dreamy. This is one of the best places to travel in September if you want that classic Mediterranean dream without the chaos.

The islands are still fully open – tavernas, beach clubs, island hopping and boat trips galore but you’ll actually be able to get a table. Raise a glass of ouzo and “yamas”- that’s cheers in Greek – because September might just be the best time to visit. Crete is spectacular for hiking (the Samaria Gorge is epic), Santorini is genuinely enjoyable when you can move around freely, and lesser-known islands like Naxos, Milos, and Folegandros are absolute gems. Flights and accommodation prices drop significantly from mid-September onward once the children go back to school.

Fun fact: Greece has over 6,000 islands, and only 227 are inhabited.

Portugal

Portugal has everything: dramatic Atlantic coastline, ancient walled villages, world-class surf, incredible food, and roads that feel like they were made for driving with the windows down. A September road trip through Portugal is one of the best things to do in September for anyone who loves freedom, spontaneity, and discovering places at their own pace.

Start in Lisbon, wind south through the golden cliffs of the Algarve, then head north through the unspoiled Alentejo coast and into the dramatic landscapes of the Douro Valley wine region. Stop at every bakery. Don’t forget to try the extremely addictive Portuguese egg tarts called Pastel de Nata!

Pull over at every viewpoint. The Rota Vicentina coastal trail is one of Europe’s most beautiful walking routes if you want to get out of the car and onto your feet. September weather is perfection, warm and sunny with barely a drop of rain. The temperatures usually range from 22-27°C.

Ibiza

Every September, Ibiza throws the world’s most famous closing parties. The closing parties mark the end of the summer season, and the island’s iconic clubs – Pacha, Amnesia, DC-10, Ushuaïa – pull out all the stops with world-class lineups for their final events of the year. If you’ve ever wanted to experience Ibiza but couldn’t face the peak-season prices, heat and crowds of July and August, September is your best bet. The energy is electric because everyone knows it’s wrapping up until next year.

Beyond the parties, September travel to Ibiza means quieter beaches, warm water (around 25°C), incredible sunsets at Café del Mar, and the chance to explore the island’s beautiful interior villages and coves without fighting for space. It’s the best of both worlds if partying isn’t your scene too. Ibiza is beautiful for long lazy beach days, exploring the cobbled streets of the old town, hippy markets, and day trips to Formentera, one of the most stunning islands in the Mediterranean.

You can also head north of the island to soak up the island’s spiritual side. It is a renowned haven for yoga, a slower-paced holiday, and holistic retreats. Far removed from the southern club scenes and abundant in beauty.

Fun fact: Ibiza’s club scene generates over €2 billion for the local economy annually

The best things to do in Ibiza

The Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites in September are, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The jagged limestone peaks glow amber and pink at sunrise; the rifugios (mountain huts) are still open, serving cold beer and hot strudel; and the summer crowds have thinned just enough to make the trails feel peaceful. September is the sweet spot before the first snowfall; conditions are near perfect for hiking. Temperatures range from 10–20°C (cooler at altitude; always best to bring more layers than you think you’ll need). Book trail huts in advance; even though peak season is over, it’s still best to book ahead.

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop is unmissable, the Alta Via 1 long-distance trail is a classic multi-day trek, and the drive along the Great Dolomites Road is one of the most scenic road trips in Europe. For the best September travel experience in Italy, combine a few days in the Dolomites with a weekend in Venice or Verona; both are infinitely more enjoyable once the August tourists have gone home.

  • Fun fact: The Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 and cover nearly 142,000 hectares.

Scottish Highlands, Scotland

September is arguably the best time to travel the Scottish Highlands. The heather is in full purple bloom, the midges (tiny biting insects – you’re welcome for the warning) are beginning to ease off, and the landscapes are bathed in moody golden light.

The West Highland Way is one of the world’s great long-distance hikes at 154 km from Milngavie to Fort William, or tackle shorter day sections around Glencoe or Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak.

Camp wild and legally under Scotland’s right-to-roam laws, one of the best things about travelling here in September. For brunch, Kinlochleven has the cosy Ice Factor Café for hearty post-hike meals. Pick up some of the tastiest sourdough and cinnamon buns from Birchwood Bakery in Inverness.

Road trip tip: Drive the NC500 (North Coast 500). Scotland’s answer to Route 66. 830 km of coastline, lochs, and single-track roads. Unmissable.

Southeast Asia

Here’s a September travel tip worth knowing: Southeast Asia at the tail end of the rainy season is seriously underrated. Yes, there’s still some rain, but it tends to come in short, dramatic bursts rather than all-day downpours. What you get in return is pretty special: landscapes that are ludicrously green, waterfalls actually running, rice paddies glowing gold and emerald, and crowds that are a fraction of what you’d find during the December–March peak. The temperature ranges from 28–33°C, with some afternoon showers (so worth it for the stunning greenery!).

Vietnam’s northern highlands around Sapa are at their best in September; it’s rice harvest season, and the terraced hillsides turn every shade of green and gold. Definitely something everyone should experience. Bali’s temples and jungle are lush and dramatic. Thailand offers incredible value with fewer tourists on both its beaches and mountain trails around Chiang Mai. The best things to do in September across Southeast Asia include sunrise hikes, temple hopping, motorbike road trips, cooking classes, and eating your weight in incredible street food.

Best Places to Travel in September

Spring in Australia

While Europe is winding down from summer, Australia is just getting started. September marks the first month of spring in Australia; temperatures are warm, but not yet scorching, national parks are green and starting to bloom, and the crowds haven’t arrived yet. If you love the outdoors, September travel doesn’t get much better than this. Temperatures in Australia range from around 15–22°C in the south, 25–30°C in the north, very comfortable for exploring.

Western Australia‘s Wildflower Season is a bucket-list natural event: over 12,000 wildflower species erupt across the landscape, making the entire region look like it’s been painted. After living in Perth, I can vouch for September; bloom season makes the whole place stunning. Just pack antihistamines if you’re hay fever-prone; my eyes were streaming the entire time! The Blue Mountains near Sydney are crisp, clear and perfect for hiking. The Great Ocean Road in Victoria is at its most dramatic and drivable. And if you head to Queensland, the water is warming up, and the crowds won’t arrive until December.

Fun fact: Australia’s wildflower season is one of the greatest natural floral displays on Earth and most people have never heard of it

The Best Things to Do in Broome, Australia

Patagonia, Argentina & Chile

September in Patagonia is early spring at the southern tip of South America; the season is just opening up, snow still dusts the peaks of Torres del Paine, and the trails are coming back to life after winter. The crowds don’t arrive until October, which means you get one of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet pretty much to yourself. For the adventurous traveller, it’s hard to beat.

The W Trek through Torres del Paine is a classic multi-day hiking route featuring glaciers, turquoise lakes, and jaw-dropping granite towers. Wildlife is everywhere: condors, guanacos, foxes, and, if you’re lucky, pumas. Accommodation opens up from October onwards, so September suits wild campers and adventurers who don’t mind roughing it a little. This is as raw and real as travel gets. Temperature ranges from 5–15°C, so you’ll definitely need layers, waterproofs, and good boots.

  • Fun fact: Torres del Paine National Park covers over 180,000 hectares and is home to one of the healthiest puma populations in the world

The Azores

If the Azores aren’t on your radar yet, they should be. I feel this is the Hawaii of Europe.

This Portuguese archipelago sitting in the middle of the Atlantic is one of Europe’s most underrated corners, and September might be the best time to go. The summer crowds have cleared, the weather is warm and settled, the ocean is at its best for swimming and diving, and whale watching season is in full swing.

In São Miguel you’ll find volcanic lakes, hot spring pools, dramatic coastline, and some seriously good hiking routes. Faial and Pico are worth it for the diving and sailing alone. The whole archipelago runs on geothermal energy, local wine, and fresh seafood; it has this feeling of being completely outside of normal life. If you want a September trip that catches you off guard, the Azores will do it.

The Maldives

The Maldives in September? Stay with me. Yes, it’s shoulder season, but that’s exactly why it’s on this list. Prices drop significantly (sometimes 30–40% compared to peak), the resorts are quieter, and the ocean sits at a warm 29–30°C with air temperatures around 28–32°C — perfect for snorkelling and diving. Some days are completely blue skies; others bring dramatic tropical cloud formations rolling in over the lagoon that are honestly worth watching. Visibility underwater is excellent between showers too, which makes it a surprisingly good month for diving.

The best things to do in September in the Maldives are largely the same as any other month because the Maldives is the Maldives. Overwater bungalows, house reef diving, sunset cruises, and doing absolutely nothing somewhere ridiculously beautiful. Oh, and a random one: the Maldives is the world’s lowest-lying country, with its highest point sitting at just 2.4 metres above sea level. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to go, lower prices and fewer crowds are a pretty good one.

Final thoughts on September Travel

The best places to travel in September truly cover every corner of the world and every kind of travel personality. Whether you’re chasing a festival, a hiking trail, a perfect beach, a road trip playlist, or a spring awakening in the Southern Hemisphere, September has a version of it waiting for you.

September travel rewards the people who show up. The shoulder season magic is real: better prices, thinner crowds, incredible light, and the quiet satisfaction of travelling smarter than everyone else.
