Even as a spontaneous traveller, it’s the one time of the year I do book at least 1 month in advance. You’ll save money and dodge the stress of panicking, looking for booked-out accommodation on all booking platforms!

A New Year’s trip doesn’t necessarily guarantee you warm weather everywhere. December is right in the depth of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and full summer in the Southern Hemisphere, so Sydney and Cape Town are in full summer swing, while Iceland has only 4 to 5 hours of daylight per day. If you want your New Year’s to feel like a huge beach party you tell all your friends and family about for years to come, Rio delivers. Millions of people head to Copacabana Beach dressed in white to celebrate with live music, samba and an incredible fireworks display, with fireworks lighting up the sky from barges along the shoreline.

Expect warm, summer weather around 28 to 32 degrees, since December falls in Rio’s peak season. Thailand (Koh Phangan) – Best for NYE Parties and Nightlife

If you want your New Year’s to feel like an actual beach party (with the famously strong buckets to drink out of watch out… they really are strong!), Koh Phangan is unbeatable.

Goa, India – Best for Beach Parties, Yoga and Budget Chill

Goa has built its reputation on two very different things: wild beach parties and quiet yoga retreats, and somehow it can achieve both very well. North Goa’s Anjuna and Baga beaches are famous for their New Year’s Eve parties, silent discos and beach shacks that stay open until sunrise, while South Goa offers a slower pace of yoga, Ayurvedic massage and quiet stretches of sand.

I was lucky enough to be in Goa for New Year’s last year, and most of us partied in North Goa for NYE, then headed down to South Goa for a calm, tranquil start to the year! I highly recommend and suggest you follow this too if you like the mix of both vibes.

The hostel scene is social, and public transport makes it easy to explore on your own. Dubai, UAE – Best for a Glamorous NYE

Dubai is one of the most stereotypical options for New Year’s, and for good reason. The fireworks display around the Burj Khalifa is one of the biggest and most photographed New Year’s countdowns in the world, bringing in crowds of locals and tourists to Downtown and the Marina every year.

Expect warm, dry, pleasant weather around 22 to 26 degrees, a very appreciated change from UK winter weather. December and January bring mild days around 18 to 20 degrees and cooler nights, so pack cardigans and longer trousers for the evenings. So much to do, from getting lost in the medina, haggling for lanterns and leather (make sure to haggle, though!), and wrapping up New Year’s Eve on a stunning rooftop terrace overlooking the city. Cape Town in December is in full summer swing, making it one of the best places to travel for New Year’s if you want a mix of city, beaches, mountains and wine (Yes please!) all in one trip.

I went in January/February, and although it was summer, I can only imagine the magical chalet/ski-town vibe it must have in winter. New York City, USA – Best for a Classic NYE Countdown

No list of the best places to travel for New Year’s would feel complete without New York, home of the original countdown moment, the Times Square ball drop. Expect cold, crisp weather around zero to five degrees, so wrap up cosy if you’re braving the crowds in person. Imagine spending New Year’s Day watching the city ice skate at the Rockefeller Centre, having their first walk of the year in Central Park- pretty special first day of the year, if you ask me!
